Julie York Studio

Julie York is a maker whose practice is situated within both art and design. In this current body of work, Julie explores the role of architecture and the perception of space through two and three-dimensional images and objects. These works connect space, surface, and form using a dialogue between materials, images, objects, and the built environment. The interplay between surface, form, image and object has a compounding reciprocal effect that disorients the normal relationship of plane and volume.

Craft is at the heart of Julie’s work. The work is made locally, and each piece is one of a kind, made by hand. The large vessels are built through a combined process engineered by Julie, which includes three different techniques: coil building, wheel throwing, and sledging. The smaller vessels are made by traditional wheel throwing. The images are hand-drawn onto the form and then painted using clay and pigment to create the final surfaces.

Julie is an Associate Professor at the Audain School of Visual Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design and is the recipient of numerous residencies, fellowships, and grants. Julie’s work has been shown nationally and internationally and is included in numerous private and permanent collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) and the Racine Art Museum. She lives and works on Bowen Island, BC.
