Wroclaw is one of the oldest cities in Poland with a long and turbulent history that is manifest on every corner. Throughout the ages, the city has been passed from hand to hand in many different circumstances. The city has belonged to the Poles, the Czechs, the Hungarians and the Germans. Although almost seventy percent of its urban fabric was destroyed in the Second World War, Wroclaw managed to rise from the ruins and now boasts many an architectural monument. The city currently features nearly eight thousand tenements – one of the largest complexes of this type found in Poland and, furthermore, in Europe. The oldest tenements originated in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and are surrounded by Baroque, Classicist, Art Nouveau and modernist architecture. The apprentice, Ron Thom, took the simple plan and rectangular foundation that had been roughed in, and transformed it into a groundbreaking work of architecture that gained national fame. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra, but using local wood and paying careful attention to its verdant oceanside setting, Thom created a landmark for the new architectural movement known as West Coast Modernism. The client, Dr. Harold Copp, was himself a trailblazer, the first head of the physiology department in the University of British Columbia’s new Faculty of Medicine and a research pioneer. Generously illustrated with both vintage and contemporary architectural photography, line drawings, and photographs of the architect and residents, The Copp House is the story of a cultural landmark on the shores of Vancouver.

Details

Author: Adele Weder

Format: Hardcover

Pages: 80

["architects","architecture","Architecture & Landscape Design","books","BOOKS1","canada","canadian","in-stock","local","Made In Canada","NSexp","public","stock
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//shop.informinteriors.com/cdn/shop/products/copp.jpg?v=1590109656
//shop.informinteriors.com/cdn/shop/products/copp.jpg?v=1590109656
Title

In 1950, a young Vancouver architectural apprentice was handed a small house project that his boss was too busy to take on.
