There is no doubt that its geographical location – confined between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range – has had a role to play in the relative nescience, although it was the former political situation that led to the country’s isolation for almost twenty years. In fact, it is only in these last fifteen years that Chilean architecture has appeared on the international stage, mostly owing to Mathias Klotz, Alejandro Aravena, Smiljan Radic and Pezo von Ellrichsausen, amongst others. Chile can take pride in having built some genuine Modern masterpieces whilst having preserved a close relationship with its culture. During the twentieth century Europe provided Chile with sources of inspiration. Le Corbusier had a great influence on Chilean architects despite never having visited the country; his followers, such as Emilio Duhart, Roberto Dávila and the BVCH office, realised buildings which are today internalised deep in the Chilean psyche. The Bauhaus movement served as another influence for architects such as Sergio Larraín. Overall, this book aims to be a practical reference source of the best architectural works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Chile.

Details

Author: Véronique Hours

Format: Softcover

Size: 13 x 24cm

Pages: 416

["_alt_architecturalguide","Architecture & Landscape Design","in-stock","NSexp","public","stock
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//shop.informinteriors.com/cdn/shop/products/Chile.jpg?v=1620865732
//shop.informinteriors.com/cdn/shop/products/Chile.jpg?v=1620865732
Title

Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Atacama Desert and the Pacific Coast: even today the apperception of Chile remains remote and indistinct. In fact, it is only in these last fifteen years that Chilean architecture has appeared on the international stage, mostly owing to Mathias Klotz, Alejandro Aravena, Smiljan Radic and Pezo von Ellrichsausen, amongst others. The elite of contemporary architecture gather to celebrate the most prestigious architecture exhibition of our time at the Biennale in the shadows of St. Mark’s Place, the Rialto Bridge and the Doge’s Palace. It is all the more amazing that there is no current guide which covers the modern architecture of the largest open-air-museum in the world. This Architectural Guide is a ticket to a journey of discovery off the beaten tourist path through Venice after 1950. The boat trips and walks in the guide lead to new residential complexes and converted harbour sheds, to works by Carlo Scarpa, Tadao Ando and David Chipperfield. This very practical travel guide also examines controversial new projects like the flood control barriers or spectacular conversions like that of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi by Rem Koolhaas. In addition to never realised designs by Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, the authors present all the Biennale pavilions from the last six decades.

Details

Author: Clemens F. Riga is famous for its unique mixture of styles and traces of war and political change: German origins, Art Nouveau at its highest level and Soviet Modernism. Latvia is a young European nation on its way to architectural prominence. In 1997, the central part of Riga was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Daugava embankment and numerous streets dating back to medieval times encircle this unique area. The author’s selection provides descriptions of nearly 800 buildings and various places of interest in Riga and its vicinity. Buildings from every historic period and architectural style are described, ranging from centuries’ old monuments to buildings currently still under construction.

Details

Author: Janis Krastins

Format: It also aimes to revive the discourse around these subjects. Achieving this will require the involvement of architects and structural, energy and environmental engineers, construction businesses and specialists, research institutes and universities.
